Understanding The Federal Work-Study Program

Purpose
UCSB Registration
Duration of Employment
Sustained Financial Need
Use It or Lose It

The Federal Work-Study Program Intent or Purpose

The intent of the Federal Work-Study Program (FWSP) is to encourage your part-time employment while you attend college. It does so by paying a portion (60%) of your salary, thus allowing you to become a "better financial deal" to your (prospective) employer.

For Example:
If you earn $200.00 in FWSP wages, your employer
will pay $80.00 while the remaining wages of $120.00
will be paid through Work-Study funds.

Unlike the other forms of financial aid that you may receive (e.g., loans, grants, scholarships, etc.), your Work-Study award never "pays to BARC." The Program requires that you earn your award by:
  • Securing employment on Work-Study; and
  • Recording hours as you work them; and
  • Receiving a paycheck in your name.

UCSB Registration

You must maintain your UCSB registered student status to participate in Work-Study. If you graduate, withdraw from the University, or for any other reason lapse or cancel your registration, you must terminate your Work-Study employment immediately. However, your employer may continue your employment on non-Work-Study funds.

The Duration of Employment

Your Work-Study employment ends as soon as:
  • You have earned your entire Work-Study award; or
  • The academic year ends (June 12, 2009).
However, your employer may wish to continue your employment on non-Work-Study funds.

Your Sustained Financial Need

Your Work-Study award is contingent upon the level of your financial need as determined by the Financial Aid Office. Your need may change as your total financial resources increase or decrease. Such a change may affect your Work-Study award; i.e., your award may increase or decrease.

"Use It or Lose It" Policy

See the Use It or Lose It Policy for important deadline dates.
  • Even if your job begins after Fall Quarter, you will need to:
    • Obtain your Work-Study Referral from the Financial Aid Office,
    • Give your Referral to your employer, and
    • Ask your employer to submit your Referral to the Work-Study Office before the December 15, 2008 deadline.
  • You will automatically lose your entire Work-Study award if you do not secure employment, or defer it by: December 15, 2008.
  • The Work-Study "Use It or Lose It" Policy allows us to more effectively track and re-distribute unused Work-Study funds.
