2008-2009 Financial Aid Application Instructions

Expand All Headings | Collapse All Headings

How to Apply:
You must submit a 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal processor. We encourage all applicants to file the FAFSA electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Filing electronically reduces the processing time and the possibility of errors on your FAFSA. The paper version of the FAFSA is orange in color and is available at all high schools, colleges, and universities (including UCSB). Regardless of what type of FAFSA you file, be sure to list UC Santa Barbara (school code # 001320) in Section 5 (electronic version) or Step 6 (paper version). You can check the status of your FAFSA with the federal processor at www.fafsa.ed.gov or by calling (800) 433-3243.

Try Filing Electronically:
Over 98% of UCSB FAFSA filers choose to file electronically. To assist you with this process, we suggest you first complete the “2008-2009 FAFSA on the Web Worksheet” available at www.fafsa.ed.gov and then transfer that information onto your on-line FAFSA. The advantages are: you won’t have to mail your FAFSA, you won’t have to get a Certificate of Mailing, and the system will tell you if there are any problems with your FAFSA at the time you enter and submit your information. If you don’t already have a Personal Identification Number (PIN), you can start the process by getting a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov. If you are required to supply parental information and a parental signature, your parent(s) can also apply for their own PIN at the web address above and sign the application electronically.

Who is Eligible:
To apply for financial aid at UCSB, you must be either a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen (as defined in the FAFSA instructions). Also, you must enroll in a degree-granting program. If you are enrolled through UCSB Extension, you are not eligible.

What's Next:
Approximately 1-2 weeks after the FAFSA processor receives your FAFSA information, they will send you an e-mail informing you to check your processing status on the FAFSA web site (www.fafsa.ed.gov). If you did not provide an e-mail address, the FAFSA processor will mail you a yellow Student Aid Report. Carefully review your status and follow the instructions if you need to make any corrections. The UCSB Financial Aid Office will receive your information as long as UC Santa Barbara, school code # 001320, is listed in Section 5 (electronic version) or Step 6 (paper version).
